Whether you can afford it or not, the Splendide Royal (5 stars) feels like an echo for a glorious past.

Whether you're looking for a bargain, a luxury vacation or a semi-permanent residence, Rome offers it all. One problem I usually find when reading Hotel guides is that they fail to contextualize of Rome's most important issues -- location.

Rome is a mesh of traffic congestion and getting about can be frustrating. Public transport such as the urban train line and the Metro can make your life a lot easier.

I present a selection of Hotels from luxurious to hip, popular and cheap, to the well-connected and peaceful. I  hope this will help visitors get a better understanding of what hotels in Rome can offer.

Luxury Hotels In Rome - Hotel Splendide Royal

Situated at the posh and central Via Veneto, the Splendide Royal is a triumph of Baroque design. Containing Deluxe rooms, 7 Junior suites, 9 full-on suites and a presidential suite, the Splendide is a relatively small hotel, but that only seems to add to its charm.

Since we're talking Luxury, lets have a closer look at the Presidential Suite.

The Presidential Suite
The Presidential Suite

So what are we looking at here exactly. As listed from the Hotel's own website, the suite contains the following:

  • Living room with presidential table, and small living area

  • King or Queen size bed (double or twin beds)

  • Two marble bathrooms, one with Jacuzzi

  • Bathrobes and personalised range of toiletries

  • HI FI system with CD / MP3 player

  • DVD player

  • Fax

  • Large flat screen TV

  • Long chairs on terraces

Marble bathrooms? Unfortunately I was unable to find a picture of one, but I'm half tempted to dress up as a potential client and get one.

The Hotel also offers three distinct Restaurant services, all of which should warrant an article for themselves, frankly.

I'll have a fosters please.

For Lunch and Dinner, there is the "Mirabelle", a 130 seat-er beauty (of which 40 are on a panoramic terrace!).

Despite the view being from the terrace being all to real, it has a surreal and artistic charm to it. The entire room seems to mesh with Rome's typically romantic orange-yellow light. Quite a stunner.

Not feeling very hungry? From noon to 1am, you could grab a "pint" at "American Bar", or if you ARE hungry, but feel like something ultra-special, reserve a dinner seat on the terrace. A luxury heaped atop another luxury.

The Fun Part - Prices and Rates

Paying the bill at the Splendide will involve a lot of eye-rolling, a sharp sense of humor and they ability to eat rice and water for several years. Here's an entree:

  • Double room single occupancy € 210,00 / € 400,00
  • Superior Double Room € 250,00 / € 600,00
  • Deluxe Double Room € 300,00 / € 720,00
  • Junior Suite € 400,00 / € 800,00
  • Suite € 500,00 / € 1.800,00
  • Continental breakfast (per person)€ 23,00
  • Buffet breakfast (per person)€ 35,00
Before turning the page on the Splendide, an additional advantage of this amazing Hotel is that it is situated near Rome's designer clothing shopping area. I add this because chances are if you are willing to blow a thousand big ones on a night of luxury, a pair of shoes or two might be well in order.

While small, the hotel merges beautifully with the magic air of the Vatican that surrounds it

The Bargain - Hotel Bramante (3 Stars)

I have always been a huge fan of Hotels that are nestled close to the Vatican, not because of any underlying religious notions, but because the area surrounding the Vatican has to be the most well connected area in Rome. Simply put: anywhere in the capital in 30 mins flat. The nearby Metro, train station and horde of public buses will make your life incredibly easy during your stay. On top of this, you are within walking distance of two of Rome's nightlife hotspots.

Hotel Bramante lies nestled within the "Borgi" next to the Vatican. The area is a breath of relaxation amid a city in Turmoil.

The Hotel provides a healthy list of on-hand services:

  • Air Conditioning
  • Temperature Regulated
  • Telephon in room
  • Refrigerator in Room
  • Individual Safe
  • Hairdryer
  • TV in Room
  • Parch or Garden
  • historic Building
  • Bar
  • Small Dog accepted
  • Transport Client
  • Excanges
  • Credit Cards
  • Internet
  • Pay Garage

Additional sevices are offered upon request:

  • Baby Sitter
  • Guided Tours
  • Laundry
  • Limousine

The price tags may seem a little steep to some, but the location turns an average price into a gift from above (give the location -- pun intended).

  • Single Room 100,00-160,00
  • Double Room 140,00-230,00
  • Double Room DeLux 185,00-240,00
  • Triple Room 170,00-250,00
  • Quadruple Room  175,00-260,00

I am in love with this hotel and see it frequently due to the fact that I need to walk past it on the way to work.

Cheap Hotels in Rome - Hotel Versailles (1 star!)

Despite its poor star rating, cheap does not equate with being horrid in this case. The small, centrally located Hotel Versailles is a family run (cute) enterprise which excels in delivering a friendly and tailored stay with great a great homely feel.

The Hotel offers customizable rooms for one to three people. There is little to say beyond I get the impression that almost anything during your stay here is customizable.

Now, here's what I meant when I promised cheap:

38 euro a night. For a centrally located Hotel. Beat that!

Which hotel is a more likely choice for you?

  • Splendide
  • Bramante
