Good Luck!

Not only do you need the balls the size of hypergiant twin binary-stars. You will need a baggage of academic and practical excellence.

Your first step on the way to space is to consider what kind of astronaut you're going to be. And no, you will not eligible for inclusion as a mascot. Still want to go?

Yes! But What Kind?

Becoming an astronaut involves some thought. Each member of a flight crew is highly specialized.

  • The Pilot

The pilot is the oft romanticized astronaut role. The Pilot serves both as a pilot and "ship's commander". He/She is responsible for the crew, the integrity of the ship and the mission.

Do you feel you have what it takes? Well, that's the easy part. Let's get a feel for the prerequisites.

  • One of the following.
  1. Bachelor's Degree in Engineering (minimum)
  2. Bachelor's Degree in Biological Science
  3. Bachelor's Degree in Mathematics
  4. Bachelor's Degree in Physical Science
  • The applicant must have had at least l,000 hours flying time in jet aircraft
  • Experience as a test pilot is desirable
  • Must be citizens of the United States

If you didn't make it. I wouldn't worry, there are far more positions to choose from. Hang in there.

  • Mission Specialist

Mission specialists are responsible for monitoring and updating the crew on the Ship's "vitals". Food, water, fuel. They also execute experiments with payload activities. They require detailed knowledge of the space-shuttle's:

"operational characteristics, mission requirements and objectives and supporting systems for each of the experiments to be conducted on the assigned missions."

There is an upside to all this mumbo-jumbo however. You'd get to perform EVAs or Extra-Vehicular-Activities, or simple, space-walks! You also get to fidget with the shuttle's RMS of arm.

The requirements are:

  • One of the following.
  1. Bachelor's Degree in Engineering
  2. Bachelor's Degree in Biological Science
  3. Bachelor's Degree in Physical Science
  4. Bachelor's Degree in Maths
  • 3 years of related and progressively responsible professional experience (I'm sure you could squirm through that one!)

I Want to Be an Astronaut

List Price: $10.00
  • Payload Specialists

The payload specialist is responsible for the equipment on the Space-shuttle. This is the newest addition to the crew. These crew-members are picked by an "investigator" from a sponsoring organization and subsequently approved by NASA.

Due to the fact that despite his status as a non-pilot, the payload specialist must take an intensive training course that prepares him for any eventuality (at least the basics...)This training is conducted at JSC and other locations, as required. Payload specialist training may begin as much as 2 years before a flight.

Requirements:

  • Suck up to your host organization and hope for the best (easy)

The Fun Stuff - Training

Basic Training

The training of Astronauts is quite a momentous team effort. It requires that collaboration of thousands of people and a plethora of expensive looking equipment.

The downside is that despite being an astronaut, you might feel like you're back in school. You will understake lessons in Biology, flight-school, Phsyics, Maths and a wide-range of technical courses.

The upside is that your new Physical Education classes blow running in cicles through the mud away completely. Furthermore not all your subjects are face-palm worthy.

Earth resources, meteorology, guidance and navigation, astronomy, physics and computer sciences don't sound half bad do they?

Now, after you've made a show at doing your homework. You can begin by relaxing in your Aircraft weightless training lessons. Nasa explains the experience as

"Flying a parabolic course, the aircraft is able to create up to 30 seconds of weightlessness when flying a parabolic maneuver. During this rather brief period of time, astronauts can practice eating and drinking as well as use various kinds of Shuttle-type equipment. Training sessions in the KC-135 normally last from 1 to 2 hours, providing an exciting prelude to the sustained weightless experience of space flight."

You can read the "weeeeeee" philosophy through the lines on that.

Forget Microsoft Flight Simulator

You're going to be on NASA's very own Shuttle Training Aircraft (STA) (which have come a long way since the film Apollo 13).

You'll also be using the aforementioned K-135 planes to test landing a heavy plane. Yes, in real life!

If you didn't make the qualifiers, you can always drive out to the Ames-Dryden Flight Research Facility and beg.

Advanced Training

Yes, that was all basic apparently. The advanced training focuses on becoming a team. You will learn to deal with malfunctions in simulated flights, or flight-specific integrated simulations. You will be given trouble-shooting scenario's both planned and unknown.

In short you will become less of a pool of talented individuals, and more of a single, functioning arm of the space-agency.

You will be using the The Shuttle Mission Simulator (SMS) extensively to this aim (which sounds like a blast, its simply a $100 million dollar Miscrosoft Flight sim).

Well done, you're an astronaut.

You did better than I. I think I failed to meet the requirements, oh, somewhere before even starting. If you go to the moon, remember to drop a referral up there somewhere, if not, feel free to indulge in a melancholic trek through space in your mind.

Hope you enjoyed the Hub.

Thoog.

Well, what can I say!? Great hub, I just have a question for you: How much can they earn, the astronauts I mean? :-0 lol

thooghun profile image

thooghun Hub Author 4 years ago

Thank you funride, quoted from NASA:

"Salaries for civilian Astronaut Candidates are based on the Federal Government's General Schedule pay scale for grades GS-12 through GS-13. Each person's grade is determined according to his/her academic achievements and experience. Currently, a GS-12 starts at $65,140 per year and a GS-13 can earn up to $100,701 per year."

space_cat 2 years ago

Ajam i am really impressed by you dedication and your dream to become an astronaut. To become an astronaut you don’t have to go to Oxford only. You have to get good grades, be active in sports, mentally strong, aware of what’s happening in the world, team player, and accept challenges thrown at you. You seem like a very strong girl. but remember becoming an astronaut shouldn’t be a dream make it your passion. It can be lengthy process so don’t lose your interest or heart. People might try to change your mind but be very strong. Only very intelligent and lucky people like you become astronauts. Do it for your father looks like he really loves you and wants you to fulfill your dream. I wish ur that your foot print will remain on moon forever like Neil Armstrong….. and you become famous like Dr. Adbul Salam.

shweta 2 years ago

hey, i m 16 and i want to become an astronaut.i just got a question what kind of Engineering do we have to do? does it really matter ????? and after we finish our high school and get in college how many years approximately it will take to become a astronaut.....

DasTo 2 years ago

Shweta, its possible that youll have to study over 10 years. Not neceseraly all in college, other types of training require years as well.

I recommend to all to who are interested to simply visit Nasa's website, and even e-mail if you'd like. Heres the website: http://www.nasa.gov/

I too wish to become an astronaut,a pilot, but simply the extensive training and all the money needed to continue the studies to become an astronaut can be a rough thought. Anyhow, I wish you all good luck!!!!

thooghun profile image

thooghun Hub Author 2 years ago

Hey everyone it's hard to keep up with all the comments, but I read them all. Asheigh, the training itself, which is NOT all paid by you can cost almost 1 million dollars! The majority of this burden is carried by the institutions that train you. I wouldn't worry about cost, you will likely only have to pay for your degree and or post-graduate degrees.

Hi everyone. This was a great Hub posted some time ago but nonetheless very informative. A little out of date on some of the technical aspects and training process. It has been modified and updated since this posting. I can't reveal exact details but I am one of the NASA crew who help train the lucky men and women who travel into space. All I want to say is keep shooting for the stars and if your dream is to travel into space, you can all do it if you try hard enough. And i'll meet you along the way...Good Luck!

I WANT TO BECOME AN ASTRONAUT.... I DON'T KNOW WHICH FACULTY SHOULD I GET INTO TO COME IN FIELD OF ASTRONOMY

SidBlack 5 months ago

If you want to be an astronaut you're going to have top put in at least 8 years of college. Becoming an officer in the Air Force or Navy and piloting air craft will help you. Currently I'm working towards becoming an Air Force Officer and getting a Doctorate in biochemistry.

It is not easy to get a doctorates degree or become a pilot in the armed forces. You'll read about minimums to become an astronaut, but trust me, there are people out there who surpass those minimums by incredible amounts. If you're not both incredibly fit and intelligent, then you can forget about even getting past the qualifications to become a military officer, much less a jet pilot or astronaut.

Signed,

A realist who has taken the first steps (going to college and joining ROTC) to become an astronaut

Well said Sid, this article is a little outdated now, and you're absolutely correct. We're talking bare minimums here.

Is it true that all the astronauts has to declare first that they believe in GOD? I heard this rule before and it was also mentioned in the movie CONTACT with J. Foster (they refused to send her to space after discovered she didn't believe in God.)

Many people out there want to be astronauts, but we forget that will be runing the future when aldults of today die. So it depends on us. We have to do well at school and i mean to really do well at school. I really lyk my brain because of it, i always get prizes in physics, chemistry, biology and mathamatics at my school. Seeing how i really do in these subjects tells me i can be an astronaut even more than an astronaut because power lies in the brain.

the whole system is money if you got enough of it you can build a space ship like what you see on tv and fly off to what ever planet you want nasa knows why they using private transit now because years from now in the future man is gonna be bringing back minerals that are more precious than diamonds and privatizing it alows that to come through faster remember the saying find the water then you find other planet with life well they found alot of planets with water the need for for spaceship builders and space explorers are gonna sky rocket in just a couple years the are gonna be drafted to do these jobs the world is about to find out something real big and everything is gonna change just like everyone is expecting just not like they thought but a change is coming, remember the last election everyone had a change well how funny election is next yr rmbr 12/21/2012 it's the last 12 12 of 12 and then check it 9 the end

I'm thinking that I want to go to Yale Univrsity.

Ps: People, the Moon mission's stopped at December 1973,
