Top 5 Best Quotes Ever
Best Quotes Ever?
This is a highly subjective list of my favorite inspirational quotes (and I duly contemplated the title (My Top 5 Favorite quotes of all time) We cannot fully understand the beauty and power of certain quotes unless we understand both the context and the experiences of those who uttered them. So, in a sense, this is a tribute to both the meaning and beauty of the message as well as the people that spoke them.
The Quote
"In three words I can sum up everything I've learned about life: it goes on."
Robert Frost on life
To me, the beauty of this quote lies in the life and struggles of Robert Frost himself. Robert frost suffered heavily throughout his life at the hands of grief and loss. At the age of 11 (1884)his father died to tuberculosis leaving the family in financial distress. Sixteen years later his mother, too, died of cancer.
But family deaths and intense depressive bouts would mark Robert's life as long as he lived. Following the death of his mother, he had to commit his sister to a mental institution, where she lived for nine years before also perishing.
Robert Frosts' children, too, were not spared from what seemed to be inherited bouts of misfortune and depression. Of his six children (re-worked from Wikipedia):
- His son Eliott died died at the age of 8 due to Cholera.
- His son Carol committed suicide at the age of 38.
- Two of his daughters (Emma and Marjorie) died after childbirth.
- His daughter Elinor died three days after birth.
- The only surviving daughter was Lesley who outlived her father by 20 years.
His wife Elinor died of heartattack one year after being diagnosed with breast cancer in 1938. Truly, then, for Robert Frost -- Life goes on. I am shattered by the amount of strength and courage in his words.
The Quote
"Don't walk in front of me, I may not follow. Don't walk behind me, I may not lead. Walk beside me and be my friend"
Albert Camus - A brief introduction
Albert Camus was a French novelist, journalist and playwright born in Mondovi, Algeria (a French colony at the time). A year after his birth in 1913, Camus' father was killed in war, leaving him in the care of his near-deaf mother in the poverty stricken colonial Mondovi. As a youth he excelled in philosophical studies and was awarded scholarships (which, as it happens, was the only way he could afford his education) as a student of philosophy.
Camus' life was marred by illness. He contracted tuberculosis and often had to spent time in Sanatoriums, and his oscillating health also prevented him from finding work as a teacher. In 1938, after having been declared unfit to join the war effort, Camus wrote L'Etranger (the stranger - Published in 1942) a stunning novel that highlights Camus' philosophical rationalizations.
The core of Camus' work dealt with the separation of thoughts and deeds in human nature, which Camus called the "Absurd". How, for instance, on the one hand man desires to be free, but then lives a life of servitude.
"The real passion of the twentieth century is servitude."
In 1957 Camus was awarded the Nobel prize for literature for his insightful work into human consciousness. Three years later at the age of 46 Camus was killed in a car crash outside Paris.
The Quote
"Pardonnez-moi, monsieur," (Pardon me, mister)
Marie Antoinette
You're no doubt wondering why on earth this quote is on the list. Without the proper context I would agree with you! As it happens these words, a polite apology were uttered as she stepped on the executioners toes before she was beheaded.
I know there are a great many "famous last words" that are wittier, funnier, more insightful and arguably -- ballsier -- but the humanity that emanates from these words is truly staggering.
Of course, you may say that the words might have been sarcastic or reflexive. Its true that most of France ridiculed her because of her Austrian descent and she was the object of many rumors (largely sexual) -- so the foundations for sarcasm are most definitely present. It is also true that her flamboyant ways must have frustrated and infuriated the lower classes and catalyzed the revolution.
I believe there are two more compelling reasons why she said those words.
- She was genuinely apologizing
- The guillotine is a tricky mechanism, and you wouldn't want to offend the executioner.
Would you have the nerve? (I didn't think so)
The Quote
"What can be asserted without proof can be dismissed without proof"
Christopher Hitchens
Hitchens represents a growing trend, and his thoughts and quotes encapsulate an exponentially growing section of society that seeks to undermine religious authoritarianism with public debate and information. Now, no matter where you stand on an issue, it is undoubtedly true that Christopher Hitchens is a highly influential figure in contemporary philosophy.
I believe the quote is important because it highlights the struggle and debates of our time: from terrorism to politics and from society to the individual. Hitchens phrases a very complex and recurrent array of thoughts into a concise and easily digestible quote.
Through the debate medium, Hitchens has used his intelligence and wit to discuss large social issues. He has done this with personal honesty and a great degree of humor (which helps introduce controversial subjects). He has often been accused of lacking respect by religious authorities and his notorious books are an example:
- God Is Not Great
- The Missionary Position (on Mother Teresa)
He also infuriated many vanity fair readers with his article called:
I do not agree with Christopher on everything he says, but he always puts on an informative show and answers complex questions with a high degree of directness and sincerity.
The Quote
"Battle not with monsters, lest ye become a monster, and if you gaze into the abyss, the abyss gazes also into you."
Friedrich Nietzsche
To admire the truth and power behind this quote one needn't look further than at the contemporary world. From global politics to the individual, our struggle with our nature has always led to this primordial conflict.
Along with this truism, the quote also carries a warning. One that he himself would experience deeply and subjectively.
In 1889 (aged 45) he suffered a mental collapse and the years that proceeded his death (1900) were ones marked with insanity.
The abyss, it seems, had looked back.
Conclusion
Thank you very much for viewing this article, I'm aware that many of these quotes are highly subjective which is why I'm looking to see if you have any quotes that have marked your life as well! Feel free to add a comment at the bottom of this page and tell me about them!
Thanks for stopping by,
Thoog.

wow i am so enjoying your work, you are so informative, but full of humility....... i am going to try and write a good hub so i can get it showcased by you..... i will be coming back for more. This is truly brilliant, the quotes and the reasons behind them ....... it is wonderful to understand just exactly where these quotes come from, thanks for your research.
...I realized something after reading your hub. Thank you Sir, this is truly worth reading..
One of my favorites..hmmm--- "Enjoy life!" :)..
Brilliant hub, I love the way you've set it out and written about the quotes rather than just stating them. Love the quotes you have used, great work thooghun :)
I like this hub. Maybe i will submit one of mine for your "Best of" collection. I feel provoked to respond to your mention of Hitchens' Why Women Aren't Funny. I think women are playing catch-up in comedy, as in so many fields. I grew up with a very funny sister. And I think Ellen Degeneres is brilliantly funny. I love the way her self-mocking doesn't offend anyone. And i noticed that many of the most popular hubbers are funny, like the recently departed PGrundy. Everyone likes to laugh. I'm looking to up my funny quotient on hubpages and in life.
i've recently discovered the greatness of Robert Frost - i love his poems "The Oven Bird" and "The Wood-Pile". Camus has also been a long-time favorite. His "The Fall" is simply amazing, a wonderfully dark novella. Thanks for sharing these quotes. We need to be continually reminded that there are greater and better minds to be indulged in then our own.
Robert Frost has been a favorite of mine for some time... I remember the first time I read his work... back in grade school we had to write a bio on him... very nice hub!
Very interesting quotes and very touching too. It is a good idea There is so much to read and so much to learn, thanks for helping out.
Ramkkasturi
Good Hub! I love Robert Frost.
The quotes are thought provoking and indeed makes us want to look inside ourselves.
Job well done on this hub. I love Robert Frost. Thanks.
Wonderful which I will return to again and again!
The quote from Robert Frost, is my favorite, nice work.
These are two of my favorite quotes:
"Far and away the best prize that life has to offer is the chance to work hard at work worth doing." ~Theodore Roosevelt
"Do your duty in all things. You cannot do more, you should never wish to do less." ~General Robert E. Lee
Wonderful quotes! I love collecting quotes and learning from the wisdom in the quotes. But what you have said is enlightening, "We cannot fully understand the beauty and power of certain quotes unless we understand both the context and the experiences of those who uttered them." Indeed, my previous understanding of the quotes is only through my own experience but nevertheless, I have always found wisdom insides quotes. After reading the story of Robert Frost, his quote makes even greater sense.
I have missed out on the part that you asked if there are quotes that have marked our life as well. One which I have always liked and personal favorite is by Gandhi, "Be the change you want to see in the world." Remembering the possible context and his experiences when those words were uttered, has made this quote even more beautiful and powerful.
Excellent hub! Very well done. I look forward to returning for more.
Loved this hub, very enjoyable to read. Well done
Thooghun, it's a wonderful hub. Like someone else mentioned it's a lovely challenge to stretch up to the quality of this one. A less worthy quote probably, but in this context where I've none yet that I'd submit to your contest, I'll go for Arnie's one: I'll be back.
An informative and interesting hub.
The one I most liked is by Friedrich Nietzsche.
A quote I like is by Khaled Hosseini in his amazing novel "A Thousand Splendid Suns":
"A man's accusing finger always finds a woman.Always"
Note: Algeria is no more a French colony. It got her independence in 1962. :)
I enjoyed reading that, thanks
When I was having problems with my boyfriend there was a quote i heard that helped me be happy and helped me to not force anything on him. The quote was "Let your love fall as softly as the mist, but let it fill the river". I still do not know who the quote is by, however this is something that I live by still.
What an inspiring and informative hub--great job. Thanks for posting.
Jacob
I'll be honest, I'm a selfish hubber and I rarely read here, preferring books to the unpolished chaff that blows across the HP threshold in such massive quantity. But, while waiting for my wife to do such and such, I rambled through the "hot hubs" and this title looked interesting, so I clicked it.
Thanks for a delightfully thoughtful and perfectly paced trip through those five quotes. This was exactly what I was in the mood for, what I hoped I might find, but didn't really expect that I would. So, again, thanks. :)
One quote I like to live by (and I have no idea who said it first), is that "It is nice to be important, but it is more important to be nice".
Excellent hub by the way :)
The Marie Antoinette quote I was actually unfamiliar with. Interesting stuff
"The King stay the King"
Great! Love these types of inspirational pages.
A wonderful quote by Mr.Frost. He hits the truth of life right on the mark!
Loved this. Great histories, especially on Frost. I agree, the histories add much more power to already powerful statements. I'll add a quote I've been thinking about a lot in recent days.
"A government big enough to give you everything you want is strong enough to take everything you have." - Thomas Jefferson
Dude absolutely brilliant hub and fantastic quotes. Robert Frost Rocks!
This hub is inspiring and awesome :)
I thought this was wonderful :-D
"when life gives you lemons, squirt the juice in the eyes of your enimies." :) My fave quote!! Lol.
well done
A great list of quotes. Thanks
I love the appreciation you have for words of wisdom passed down to us today. So many of us have taken such words as lamps for our own lives.
Interestingly, many of the folk you quoted have dealt with depression and other issues. Somehow it is reassuring to see that such great people lived with mental health issues, yet nonetheless were known and respected for good reason.
There's a blog right now of a guy called Joe Lerner, who is writing about his efforts to overcome depression ( http//:www.unstickingjoeslife.com ), yet he has managed careers as a journalist, and a therapist helping others.
It's all inspiring for the rest of us. Thanks for your hub.
Amazing and uplifting. Thank you
very simple and yet powerful. I love your choice of quotes!
I also love quotes and have many stored away on pages of notebooks or somewhere in my mind. one that has greatly influenced my life is from Martin Luther King Jr. " our life begins to end the day we become silent about things that matter."
Very nice work... I love quotes - but I love them even more when they are put in context... Thanks...
Here's my favorite quotation:
If you want to do something, first you must be someone.
--Johann Wolfgang von Goethe
Superb! Not only do I love the quotes but that you put them into context and gave us a bit of history behind the quoter and what may have inspired them.
Great Hub!
Terrific hub. Really superb quotations.
What about... "It wasn't a pick... I was clearly on the outer rim!" - Jerry Seinfeld
Great hub, I love the Robert Frost quote!
i went acca on your ads man. gettin paid!
You’re right about these “Top 5” selections being subjective but the people who made them are undoubtedly intriguing individuals and the fact remains that any one person’s list of favorite quotes is bound to subjective. Consider two quotes from Martin Luther, “This day you see me, and then, not ever again,” and “Here I stand. I can do no other.” The two situations during which these statements were made shine further light upon them, but then again it’s all subjective.
Well, thank you for a really wonderful article, so very far removed from all the "quote hubs" I've seen up to now in this venue! Also thank you for introducing me to Christopher Hitchens and that brilliant quote, which I'd never heard before.
On another note: I find the clarity and smoothness of your prose very attractive, how you state your opinion without ever sounding patronizing. I'm going to have to read more from you, for sure.
Here's a quote that I like, can't say as it's "the one", it somehow and very simply seems befiting in this context: "Education is not filling a bucket, but lighting a fire", by the Irish poet Yeats.
I like one of Bill Gates quotes - "Life is not fair. Get over it."
Like your quote, i always do one on my site "read to learn"...It amazes me that teachers tell kids to learn to read,,,to me it should be "READ TO LEARN" only by reading can we learn.
One of the best hubs I have read all day.. Amazing
The first and second is amazing, not saying others are bad.... Great article, Keep posting this kinda works.........:-)
These are the most elaborate explanation of thoughts that I have seen .thnx a lot
This is a terrific hub and one that definitely could use a Part 2 or 3. Thanks so much for this, definitely increases the knowledge base of Hubpages!
"I never teach my pupils. I only attempt to provide the conditions in which they can learn."
Albert Einstien on teaching
"If you are out to describe the truth, leave elegance to the tailor."
Albert Einstein on truth.
When it comes to quotes I got to stick with the physicists. If your going to quote physicists who better than the walking oxymoron, Albert Einstein.
Great hub, ever thing about making one of funny quotes. Like Rumsfeld?
Wow! This is really a great hub! I really enjoyed reading it. Thank you very much for sharing.
Very nice hub! I like how you went into the people's backgrounds and gave some relevancy to their quotes.
I really enjoyed this one: "Don't walk in front of me, I may not follow. Don't walk behind me, I may not lead. Walk beside me and be my friend".
One of my personal favorites: "Only those who dare to fail greatly can ever achieve greatly." ~ Robert F. Kennedy
Great HUB, I thoroughly enjoyed it! Keep up the good work and positive thoughts. ;-)
great quotes, love the last one!
awesome quotes, uplifting and motivational!!!!!
This was a fun read. Thanks.
Love these. Excellent choices.
Brilliant hub, I love the way you've set it out specially the appropriate content with impressive knowledge
Thank you for sharing.
When Marie Antoinette apologized to the executioner I bet it was reflex. I got a ticket last night and said of all things, THANK YOU. When I really meant F. YOU.
Best quotes.liked the first very much.
I agree it's very hard to narrow it down to 5. I loved reading this and can't dismiss any.
Thank you for sharing, I love this quote from Robert Frost
""In three words I can sum up everything I've learned about life: it goes on." There are so many great quotes from humble people, life is so full of truths. I thoroughly enjoyed your post, thumbs up and you have my vote.
Great article, laughed loudly at the introduction to Christopher Hitchens. Although your quotes were random and subjective, they still appeared well tied together to me, bravo.
Ben
Great topic. I've always enjoyed the Camus quote.
Nice quotes! Very deep.
One of my favorite quotes of all time belongs to Hannibal, commander of Carthage:
"We will either find a way, or make one."
It's one of the quotes that positively influenced my life.
I don't get too caught up in quotes as they are just one small utterance in the lifetime of a single individual and philosophies often change throughout one's life but I must say that I liked looking at the background of the people who uttered these. It does 'add' weight to the quote knowing who or why they said it.
This hub is great, as I did not know those quotes yet and you made it very clear why you like them.
Let me share two of my favorite quotes:
"I feel like a mosquitoe in a nudist colony, I know what to do, just not where to start." Pat Riley
and "Once you understand a great piece of art, it is dead for you." Oscar Wilde
A very good list. I hope you write a Top 10 quotes soon :) One of my all time favourite quotes is by Albert Einstein. I'm sure you've heard of it before, "Imagination is more important than knowledge. Knowledge is limited; imagination encircles the world."
I love how this makes me ask myself, "What quotes inspire me?" Thanks
Life is far too important to be taken seriously ..Oscar Wilde
If wishes were horses devils would ride
I really like quote #2 - never saw that one before. Thanks for sharing.
A great collection of quotes. It is especially enlightening to read something of the story behind the quote.
One of my own personal favourites comes from Sir Winston Churchill, a statesman from the days before spin-doctors when men & women of note wrote their own speeches:
"[The] truth is incontrovertible. Panic may resent it, ignorance may deride it, malice may distort it, but there it is."
...and you can't argue with that!
The quotes are really very much inspiring. The illustration made are very close to reality. The whole hub is meticulously formatted and superbly presented. The video shared is awesome. Thanks a lot for sharing such a wonderful peace of text.
Frost,the best.
Great Hub. I particularly liked the Marie Antoinette quote. My favorite quote is: All I really need to know I learned in kindergarten by Robert Fulghum.
I loved the hub!! One of my all time favorite quotes [which also greatly impacted my life]:
VOCATUS ATQUE NON VOCATUS DEUS ADERIT "Invoked or not invoked, the God is Present" (From the Epitaph of Carl Jung)
Hi thoogun,
I enjoyed reading this. I think the Nietzsche quote is my favourite.
The other thing I like about Christopher Hitchens is his humour...whether you love or hate him he's always entertaining.
Cheers
I love lists! They make me think about my own lists.
Marie Antoinette probably apologized because it was the socially correct thing to do. She and her husband Louis were completely blind to the events happening outside of Versailles. The court lived on the starving poor--and then wondered why there was a bloody revolution.
I hadn't realized that Frost's life was so sad. Probably explains the melancholy tone of much of his poetry.
Thank you for sharing this.
Thanks for the post. I enjoyed Albert Camus' quote the best.
Thanks for giving light on Albert Camus' quote. I loved that since I first read it more than 25 years ago as I researched in our high school library- it was a "quotable quote" but I never knew the author was a Nobel Prize winner!
I enjoyed the post, but with exception to Christopher Hitchens controversies. To Frost,I say "What a life"! Thanks goodness he found the inner strength to carry on!!
Nice choice of quotes. My favorite is "Don't walk in front of me, I may not follow. Don't walk behind me, I may not lead. Walk beside me and be my friend".
Liked your hub. Joining your fan club and would like to invite you too.
Some wonderfully inspiring quotes, thank you!
the quote,
Don't walk in front of me, I may not follow. Don't walk behind me, I may not lead. Walk beside me and be my friend
is one that was given to me years ago by a friend. I think the quote represents what a true friend is!
I enjoyed reading this hub. Interesting to see the illustrations and information regarding the quote.
Excellent article!
nice hub good work mate
oh great article
This reminds me of so many others. Mine is "They told me to cheer up it could be worse. So I cheered up and it got worse." But we have just opened the door on a whole new conversation. Good job.
Inspiring or interesting article.
Excellent hub, I really enjoyed it! Thank you
I've always liked great quotes, thanks for the fun and interesting article!
Great choice of quotes, including Frost's... "it (life) goes on."
While I wouldn't say it is a "best quote" I've always liked, "It is better to keep your mouth shut and be thought a fool, rather than open it and remove all doubt."
:) Steve
That was a very impressive list of quotes. Its so good to find someone else that looks deeply into these old saying and find the true meaning behind them. I believe that it's important to know at least a little bit about who you are quoting when you are actually using the quote. Otherwise one might say things out of context and would others wise misinterpret the saying all together.
"In three words I can sum up everything I've learned about life: it goes on."
My all time favorite!
What a wonderful hub! I wasn't familiar with 4 out of the 5 and I'm so glad you brought them to my attention. One of my passions is mathematics, so I especially liked Christopher Hitchins quote. I probably look at it with a slightly different slant than most others would. But Being very interested in mathematics, and in particular in logic, I am very attuned to such ideas and I believe he is absolutley correct!
Two of my favorite quotes are "Do no worry about your difficulties with mathematics. I can assure you mine are still greater."~Albert Einstein
and
"Mathematics is not a careful march down a well-cleared highway, but a journey into a strange wilderness, where the explorers often get lost. Rigour should be a signal to the historian that the maps have been made, and the real explorers have gone elsewhere." ~W.S. Anglin
Great quote selections. That Camus quote would definitely be in my top five as well.
And thanks for linking Hitchen's Vanity Fair article! I had yet to read it, and found it amusing (like much of C.H's work).
Nice post..
Indeed, life goes on..No matter what happens, life continues, its for you to make the decision on how to deal with it..
Great post. Here's another one of my favorite quotes, short and sweet.
"Man was born free, and he is everywhere in chains"
-Jean-Jacques Rousseau
In the end, it's not going to matter how many breaths you took, but how many moments took your breath away. — Shing Xiong
Great piece. It is truly unique. Kept my interest throughout! How about this: "You can't save the world, so just worry about saving yourself!"
Great hub!
An interesting hub, and very well presented.
It goes on, life that is,..... he was right of course it sure does, enjoyed reading this hub.... I felt enlightened, and had a better understanding of some familiar quotes.
an excellent, well written article, enjoyed this. Albert Camus & Robert Frost....just brilliant, hadn't heard them before but they are so true
I find this hub to be the best in its category (famous quotes) so I voted, useful, awesome and beautiful at the same time, since it qualifies for all those qualities (wish HP would have given us the choice of “intelligent” as well)
I also appreciate you giving a short, but meaningful description of those exceptional men. Thank you Sir
I love the Friedrich Nietzsche quote.
This time you're eating paper the next time it's gonna be glass -Bruce Lee
This is undoubtedly my favorite of Nietzsche. He was quite mad you know. Interesting little quirk. Other than that, he could have been brilliant! There's that fine line, again, between sanity and insanity.
I'll go with the second reason in the case of Marie Antoinette's apology.
Nicely done! When you mentioned Marie Anntoinette I thought you were going to include her controversial, "Let them eat cake" quote but I never heard of the pardom me quote. Very informative, I didn't know a lot about Robert Frost although he was one of my favorites, nice job Cheers.
Thanks for the Christopher Hitchens idea, never heard of him, but sounds like my kind of reading :D
Sorry, but nobody believes in Leonard Ron Hubbard anymore. Find something else to write about, thanks.
One of my favourite quotes and one especially pertinent to what we do is:
Thinking is easy
Acting is difficult
And to put ones thoughts into action is the most difficult thing in the world ~ Goethe :)
I love quotes sites! Neat Hubs :)
Insightful, both in your choices and in your analysis. I did particularly love the quote of Marie Antoinette, which I was unfamiliar with. Well done.
This is really, really well done! Totally enjoyed it!
Well thought out! Very enjoyable.
everything is good and what is good is best thought and writen
Hello to all;
I want some one to send me some nice quotes/hubs regularly to my email.
mus_sarwary@yahoo.com
Thanks
waiting...
Thanks a lot. Very interesting and deep article
I think a great quote is, "Any man who can drive safely while kissing a pretty girl is simply not giving the kiss the attention it deserves." - Albert Einstein
"In three words I can sum up everything I've learned about life: it goes on."
Absolutely great quote. Robert Frost is one of the most importat poets ever..
Thank you indeed
Hat's off Boss!
So I finally read the whole hub in one go. Phenomenal :).
Meeting you was fate, becoming your friend was a choice, but falling love with you was beyound my control....
Thanks, Thoog. I never realized how much death surrounded Robert Frost, but then it might surprise us all how much death surrounds our own lives.
Love all the quotes--context is crucial--but unknown, or off the beaten path, quotes are beautiful--awesome--useful--and funny. So you know how I voted.
"It is not how much time we have on this earth that is important. It is what we do with that time that is everything." The White wizard named Gandalph,or was he Grey at the time of quote, stated this bit of wisdom in Tolkien's epic--I like it.
You should, definitely have another top 5 quotes Hub. You're research is splendid--really like the Antoinette courtesy till the bitter end.
I enjoyed your approach to writing this Hub. A collection of quotes is almost always interesting, but choosing only 5 and then presenting the context lets the reader slow down from skipping to leisurely strolling, putting me in mind of one of my favorites, "Life is a journey, not a destination"...Ralph Waldo Emerson.
Many years ago a co-worker gave me a quote that has stuck with me. I can't remember his name or where he got it from, but here goes:
"It is better to hear 'There he goes' than 'there he lies.' I've used this in my own writing often.
Thanks for a great hub!
I love all of them but I have to admit that Nietzsche is my favourite.
Football penalty taker: How can I possibly score?
Goalkeeper: How can he possibly miss?
Absolutely awesome hub! You quoted my favorite Albert Camus quote, and my favorite Nietzche quote. I love this. UP!
I really like this hub. Interesting quotes. I really liked the one of Nietzsche. I really admire him for his view of the world. vote up! (I have a list of warrior quotes, have a look and tell me what you think)
This is awesome, what a wonderful layout!
Wonderful quotes and Camus work related to existentialism and the concept of absurdity.
The quote I respect came from a lady who I spoke to after going to counselling about a relationship breakup - she said "dear, you never get over it, you just get on with it." and that actually shifted my whole perspective and I no longer had a brick wall in front of me.
And my own favorite quote, from myself, is that "age does not dignify behavior!" Which I have used on a few occasions, when people who are old enough to understand exactly what they are doing, continue to do something that they know wrong because they think they can get away with it because of their age.
I love that you not only point out these important quotes, but present the contexts in which the words were said. Well done!
Quite interesting hub!
One of my favorite quotes is "When there's conflict, there's profit."
D: thanks lot for putting such good info in your hub..........
My favorite quote is, "The best things in life are either illegal, immoral or fattening". Although, since I have had children I have come to realize that the quote isn't really true but it is still funny.
The Christopher Hitchens quote I like - however, it certainly causes problems for anyone religious, who believes the Bible (or any other religios tome) word for word...
For it is true now, as it always was and always will be, that to be free is the same thing as to be pious, to be wise, to be temperate and just, to be frugal and abstinent, and to be magnanimous and brave; and to be the opposite of all these is the same as to be a slave.
I love this hub, I think the quote from Friedrich Nietzsche is the most poignant of the five, especially when looking at the last decade of his life, it's almost like he could see into the future.
Great hub! I didn't get through all your comments so I don't know if this quote has been mentioned or not but it was the first quote I ever heard that really spoke to my heart and made me think. It is..
"The only thing necessary for the triumph [of evil] is for good men to do nothing." Edmund Burke
It still remains one of my favourite quotes. Thanks for sharing yours. Happy Hubbing! :)
This is a great hub...Thank you...
Great hub! I liked your quotes and that you gave us a clever intro to put it in context. My current favorite quote is- What matters most is how well you walk through the fire- Charles Bukowski.
Great collection of quotes.
Very informative and heartwarming. Thank you!
I will not say all those things which can please an author but may be something which can make an author himself realize how great his thoughts are.! Thanking all those great writers and philosophers who with the help of their thinking gave us a chance to think!!!
I like another Nietzsche quote: He who has a why to live can bear almost any how.
I would like to ecco what many say about this HUB it is great and I love the way you went into depth about each quote. I also like how you took much time and thought into its layout and graphics as well. In fact I took note ... smiles.
I think like you why I live by some of my fav quotes is because of the story behind who shared it. helen Keller is one I aften feel this way about possibly being vission impared myself is why.
One quote I think of daily is from Walt Disney and yes some because not only did he say it but was a living example that, "if you can dream it you can do it" so I too believe this fully.
Thank YOU much for a magnificent HUB ... hugs
~Expect Miracles
When the going gets tough the tough gets going
An interesting list. Undoubtedly, almost everyone would have a different list, but it is always interesting to see another's take.
Thanks.
-J
Yes. They are the top 5 best quotes ever, i think!
these war the far best quotes i have ever read great job
Powerful indeed. A good quote can change your day, change your life. Thanks!
My favorites today are "The true measure of a man is how he treats someone
who can do him absolutely no good." Samuel Johnson
and
"More die in the United States of too much food than of too little."
John Kenneth Galbraith
Amazing quotes - loved reading them!
I think this one is the best quote: Did your dream date just pass you on the highway?
Engaging article. Your choices interesting, yet worthy. Your "Girl Scout Cookies," like the cookies themselves . . . a bit over the top.
My favorite quote of all time is "Hard work beats talent when talent doesn't work hard". I liked the format you presented the quotes in and the background information that was included.
Loved this post! All of them great quotes, but my favorite was Marie Antoinette. So much was said in such a simple, common saying.
How about Julius Ceasar at the siege of "Alesia" when he said: - "The enemy have got us surrounded, they are not getting away this time"
Possibly a final quote (PUN) " The graveyards are full of indespensible people"
Great hub, meaningful quotes accompanied by descriptive insight.
Another thought for death:
Freedom is not free. Death is not free!
What a wonderful collection of quotes. Thanks for putting it together!
I voted awesome on Top 10 Quotes of All Time because wise and influential were unavailable. The quotes on the video were also interesting but your descriptions of the speakers and their circumstances elevated the meaning of the chosen quotes with pertinent content. I am happily now following you.

I love Robert Frost work, as well as many of his other quotes, but “In three words I can sum up everything I've learned about life: it goes on.” Has to be my favorite, simply because it’s so honest and true. Something absolutely horrible could happen to you, yet the next day the sun still rises, people still go to work, life keeps going whether you wish it to or not.
Nice one. It seems that you like to favor one side of the religion/faith debate but don't care to enter a debate. that is to commended. Great quotes.
I have a hard time deciding which of the following I like best:
"Funny thing about truth, it does not change."
"Truth invites scrutiny, error demands tolerance."
clever layout for the quotes. well done!
my simply quotes."honesty is the best identity"...
This is a very inspiring quote for me:
"Don't walk in front of me, I may not follow. Don't walk behind me, I may not lead. Walk beside me and be my friend"
My favorite quote from your thread is "life goes on" great job!! Please post more quotes :)

"What can be asserted without proof can be dismissed without proof"-I like this one
I love the Antoinette quote. Very cryptic. Kind of like the Mona Lisa's smile :)
Wow, these are really brilliant quotes. Just the pick-me-up I was looking for! I had *no* idea that Marie Antoinette had said that before being beheaded. And I LOVE the Robert Frost quote. Gosh, I love all of these!
Nice List, Fredrich Nietz is my favorite.I really like the quote, "Hope is the worst of evils, for it prolongs on the torment of man." I think that's how it goes. :3
Brilliant! I love them
This provided an interesting read and food for thought. "Battle not with monsters, lest ye become a monster, and if you gaze into the abyss, the abyss gazes also into you." Is a great quote. You have my follow

bestest quote.........
You have the best quotes... i wish you can still add more quotes that is heart touching..
awesome quotes...
The only one I can think of adding would be Gandhi:
"Be the change you wish to see in the world."
Great selection. Thanks.
Goodness, Marie's last words?
That's amazing.
I'll have to come up with something more witty than that!
Your Hub was Awesome! ;D
brilliant writing, amazing quotes...may I share one of my fav's:
How someone treats you is their Karma, how you react is yours.
I love quotes, I google quotes all the time, they bring me joy... that might make me a dork but I'll take it!
Thanks a lot for these interesting Quotes..nice hub
Well-written hub! Keep it up!
Great hub! Some really interesting, thought-provoking quotes. I particularly like Robert Frost's quote on life - no matter what happens to us, it is true that life goes on. The world doesn't stop turning just because of the tragedies one person suffers, and good job too - time is a great healer, after all. Voted up!
My own thought..I just wanted to smile, then I looked at myself and I laughed...!!!
By far the best "Quote" Hub I've read on HubPages. Love the background you've included as well as the appropriate, high-quality, unwatermarked photos.
But seriously, great job! My favorite Nietzche quote is currently my email signature: "He who has a why to live can bear almost any how."

You have quoted two of my favorites. How did you know?
"Don't walk in front of me, I may not follow. Don't walk behind me, I may not lead. Walk beside me and be my friend"
"Battle not with monsters, lest ye become a monster, and if you gaze into the abyss, the abyss gazes also into you."
Thank you. Well done, well thought of, well researched and well presented.
