Cheap Portable DVD Players
By thooghun
Are you looking for a highly flexible, high-quality product at a cheap price? You're in luck! I've scrutinized the Internet in an attempt to find the best deals and most lauded models around. With the spirit of factual brevity in mind, off we go!
Sony DVP-FX930
What immediately strikes the eye is the 9 inch, high resolution (800x400 - 12-bit/108MHz) screen which fully supports widescreen capability. The monitor itself is semi-detachable and can swivel and tilt in order to accommodate any number of scenarios such as hooking it up to the back of a car's front seat so that the passengers can comfortably watch a feature film. An extra headphone jack -- beyond the first -- can also allow shared audio for an even more immersive experience.
Utility and performance are the names of the game here: The frame itself hosts the keys needed to operate the player, and it's inbuilt dual sensors allow users to remotely operate its functions (a car adapter is included in case you are concerned about the longevity of all this goodness - the internal battery life is estimated at roughly 6 hours).
Software and compatibility is another forte of the FX930. You can directly plug the unit into a TV screen in order to transform it from a portable DVD player into a home theater. Playback is not limited to a narrow spectrum of formats, it is able to playback multiple formats right from the get-go.
Philips PET741B/37
This model's popularity is well-deserved and focuses on functional simplicity. It houses a slightly smaller display than the previous model, with its 7" TFT color LCD display in 16:9 wide screen format, which may make it less appropriate in certain instances but more portable.
As with the Sony FX930, Philips has added a car adapter to the pack, which is handy since the battery life is estimated at around 2 hours (rechargeable) play-time.
Where this model truly excels is in its ease of use. It requires (although they are included) no instructions. It is a plug and play device which suits on-the-go families, and especially children, perfectly. It also conveniently doubles as a home DVD player as well. Simply plug her in and you're good to go.
The price is also another great feature of this product, and while it boasts fewer options than the Sony, it is cheaper, highly compact and functional, and arguably better for children to tamper with.
Users can also expert high quality, crisp video and audio.
Axion AXN-6979
For those that require more flexibility, this portable DVD package consists of a dual screen portable DVD player, allowing you to play the same media in two separate locations (which may make it perfect for long car trips).
Both screens have 7-inch widescreen LCD display with 1440 x 234 pixels resolution, 400:1 contrast ratio and feature a16:9 aspect ratio. Two high-definition audio jacks allow audio to be shared (it wouldn't really make much sense otherwise would it :) ).
A remote control is also included, a carrying case and DIN cables to connect the monitors and a car adapter should you need a rapid recharge while out in the middle of nowhere.
An external A/V jack is also included should you wish to connect the screen up to just about anything, including a games console. Not bad!
P.S There seems to be some contrasting opinions (especially on Amazon) regarding their solidity. The point in contention is their longevity, and that they have a tendency to break or stop working. However there are many people who claim to have even dropped them and found that they worked perfectly.
jWin JDVD762
Currently the highest rated cheap portable DVD player I could find. The monitor itself is a 9" Swivel TFT Display, rivaling Sony's great product in terms of amplitude. The main reason I included this model is that the greatest complaint with portable DVD players, is that they break easily and are generally fairly fragile (as evidenced by the Axiom review).
This jWin model boasts Anti Shock Protection, targeting an empty and much needed niche for travel-intense (or kid intense) customers.
With regards to features, this model reminds me of the Sony X930, its major benefit rooting from its large, swiveling screen. But one overlooked fact is that it fully supports USB 2.0 full speed/SD/MMC memory cards, making it a must-have for anyone that uses them.
Built in stereo speakers and the ever-useful dual stereo jacks, make this almost as family friendly as the Axiom, but offers a great deal more features.
